For the love of our horses

You know it’s a serious issue when Bruce McAvaney delivers an editorial

There is not one word that Bruce said at the opening of Channel 7’s racing coverage on Saturday that was not spot on.

The 99.9% of people who love racing, love horses and are shocked, appalled, heartbroken and distressed by the horrific images of ex-racehorses being slaughtered in a Queensland abattoir.

This isn’t an issue that’s simply going to go away in the age of the 24-hour news cycle either.

This is time for racing authorities particularly state ones to put egos aside and put the interest of the horses that give us punters so much joy to make sure that nothing like this ever happens in Australian racing ever again.

It’s also opened a can of worms for woke, anti-racing activists and bandwagon cancel culture issues with people calling to simply “Ban Horse Racing”

What a stupid, pathetic way to go about the issue.

Let’s realistically point out what would be at stake if Horse Racing were to be banned – jobs in their tens of thousands would be gone, the carry-on effect it would have on industries such as ours, hospitality, tourism in not only metropolitan areas but that of regional towns.

But it’s best not to let the consequences get in the way of an easy hashtag in a social media echo-chamber.

Do the anti-horse racing people have any idea what love and care the overwhelming majority of horse owners, trainers and jockeys have for these amazing athletes?

If you want to not see any of the crap produced by these people – it’s best to mute #nuptothecup.

I’m sure they’ll enjoy the day off or penalty rates they’ll be getting on Melbourne Cup Day.

If you want someone who’s given some thought, perspective and a solution to the issue on social media, look to Anthony Calea

The people who love racing, want change and want those responsible for the horrible slaughter of our beloved racehorses brought to justice and our racehorses to live a full and prosperous life once their time on the track is done.

Racing has the power to fix the problem and be the solution.

Our horses deserve the best.

Worth a Listen

If you’re looking for a sports podcast of a long-form to listen to at work today, may we recommend The Greatest Season That Was Presents – The Fitzroy Bulldogs.

The same team that brought you The Greatest Season That Was – AFL 1993 and their series about the 1999 Cricket World Cup are a must-listen for those who love their history and nostalgia and this one is no exception.

The team focuses on the almost Fitzroy-Footscray merger of 1989 and how Footscray (Western Bulldogs) fought back – 30 years ago today.

Their long interview with Bulldogs president Peter Gordon is a gripping listen of the brutal world of footy off the field, and how you should never, ever take your football club for granted.
