Dawn Dawn returned a pleasing first-up effort and a looks a live chance at a price second-up at Caulfield today. The Team Hawkes-trained five-year-old is only lightly raced and mustered a decent turn of foot to finish less than a length second behind Prime Candidate at Rosehill Gardens a couple of weeks ago. This is only her second attempt at the Victorian way of going, but she finished better than midfield in Group 3 company here last spring and this is obviously a far easier task. The $8 on offer at publish looks overs.
My Pendant has returned to racing in outstanding form this time and can record a second win in succession at Caulfield this afternoon. The Danny O’Brien-trained filly worked home well to finish second behind Sylvia’s Mother at Flemington first-up, before going one better over 1400m last time out. She’ll take further improvement into this race and will take plenty of beating.
Pippie has recorded two wins from as many starts this time and looks well placed for a bit of black type in this afternoon’s Cockram Stakes. The Written Tycoon mare has been a strong and consistent performer throughout her short racing career, but has clearly returned to the races a far more furnished prospect this time, and her performance to win in BM78 company here last time out was easily the best of her racing tenure so far. With even luck, she can make it three.
There’s black type racing at Morphettville today and I think that the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Waging War will be extremely difficult to beat in the Penny Edition. The Rebel Raider gelding has returned several typically strong efforts this time in and was last seen finishing third in the Group 3 Spring Stakes behind the likes of Caulfield Guineas fancy Dalasan and Group 1 winner Scales Of Justice, who is well in the market for the Memsie Stakes today.
