2019 State of Origin Game 3 Tips & Preview

The 2019 State of Origin Series will be decided at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on Wednesday night (July 10th) when the New South Wales Blues and Queensland Maroons square off in Game 3.

New South Wales were forced to respond when the series arrived in Perth and respond they did. The wholesale changes made by coach Brad Fittler, which were met widely with criticism, paid massive dividends. The Blues could hardly have been more impressive in recording a 38-6 victory, and they will take all of the confidence and momentum into the decider.

Queensland mustered some of their famous heart to get over the line in Game 1 and they will need to re-find that and then some, if they are any chance of winning back the Origin shield on Wednesday night.

Unsurprisingly, New South Wales are resounding $1.40 favourites to beat Queensland ($3) in State of Origin Game 3.

State of Origin tips for Game 3 and a preview of each team can be found below.

New South Wales

There is no denying that New South Wales is enjoying the beginning of a very strong generation of players and they are worthy of their clear favouritism in head-to-head State of Origin Game 3 betting.

Their performance in Game 1 was sub-par, but they remained in the contest until the final whistle and clearly learned several valuable lessons, before rising to the occasion in Game 2. Coach Brad Fittler has remained true to his Game 2 side and the same team will step out in Sydney.

This is a fresh slate for both sides, but if New South Wales can muster something similar to their performance in Perth, they could very well put on another show for their home crowd. I’m sure it won’t be quite as convincing, but the Blues loom as an absolute force again and should be winning.

New South Wales Game 3 Team:

1. James Tedesco 2. Blake Ferguson 3. Tom Trbojevic 4. Jack Wighton 5. Josh Addo-Carr 6. James Maloney 7. Nathan Cleary 8. Daniel Saifiti 9. Damien Cook 10. Paul Vaughan 11. Boyd Cordner 12. Tyson Frizell 13. Jake Trbojevic. Interchange: 14. Dale Finucane 15. Tariq Sims 16. Cameron Murray 17. Wade Graham.

*UDPATE* Since publish, backrower Tariq Sims has been ruled out via suspension and halfback Nathan Cleary via injury. David Klemmer and Mitchell Pearce have been rushed into camp to fill the void.

Queensland

Queensland have a habit of keeping their best footy for Game 3 and they certainly require that to be the case in 2019.

They looked out of the contest pretty early in Brisbane, but ultimately fought back in and won the game, but they were just awful in Perth and a repeat of that performance in Sydney would see them lose by an even greater margin.

Coach Kevin Walters has made just three changes to his Game 2 squad; forwards Jarrod Wallace and Dylan Napa have been dropped for the returning Joe Ofahengaue and debutant Christian Welch, while Corey Norman has also earned his first call-up to cover for injured fullback Kalyn Ponga.

Given the massive improvement required, I just don’t think that Queensland can turn around such a big deficit in 2019. I am confident that they will finish closer than they did in Game 2, but it could be another long night at the office for the Maroons.
