The Sir John Monash Stakes is the feature race on a card that is packed full of horses that are not quite good enough to race in the Autumn or Spring carnival.
We have run our keen eye over the entire card at Caulfield and have offered our thoughts and betting suggestions.
There is only a couple of weeks left for these two year olds to get that all important win on their resume and Avon River is one that is striving for exactly that. It’s unfortunate that James Cummings and Godolphin really struggle to produce any winners with these young ones but Avon River can buck that trend with a win in the first!
Charlayne was an impressive winner at Randwick two back before running into River Bird last time out. The Sebring mare has a fair amount of talent and she maps to get a nice run in transit from the inside barrier.
I’m happy to be with Groundbreak in a very big and open race. His win first up was full of merit and the son of All Too Hard will only get better will the step up in distance. He is untested on the heavy and the barrier is an issue.
Fight is shooting for three wins on the trot in the race and is a proven performer on the heavy track. His win at Sandown last start showed his toughness and it was made all the more impressive considering he was caught wide for a large portion of the race. He will have to overcome a wide draw but the step up to 1400m suits as does the drop in weight.
Organza has been nominated for more races in the past two weeks than I have had hot dinners however she looks well placed in this contest. She is a mare will plenty of talent and she has drawn well. She has had just the one run unplaced in the heavy which is the main concern.
Junipal has been racing well in Queensland and he comes into this race fit and ready to win. His second to Baccarat Baby at the Sunshine Coast was full of merit and he proved that he can handle the heavy track which he will face again here. Tricky gate but looks to have a class edge over most of these.
Golden halo was a dominant winner at Swan Hill before finding one better down the straight at Flemington last time out in Listed company. She is better suited around the bend in my opinion and if she can overcome the difficult draw and the heavy track, I think she represents the best value of the day.
Princess Of Queens has been racing consistently of late in quality races. She has drawn very well and if things plan out for her, she has a turn of foot that will allow her to be competitive at nice odds.
This looks a perfect race for the Godolphin runner Soothing who goes into this first up assignment with two barrier trials under her belt. The last of which was on the heavy track at Randwick in which she narrowly ran second. Drawn well and goes well fresh.
Bedford broke through for a much deserved win at Sandown last start and powered away from his rivals in the concluding stages. He is a horse that lays out and fights the jockey however when he knuckles down to the task, he has a very good turn of foot. This is a step up in class for him however he will appreciate the drop in weight and is proven on the heavy track.
