Feature racing in Queensland turn to the beautiful and picturesque Caloundra racecourse on Saturday and there is plenty of black type racing on offer.
The Sunshine Coast Guineas, Caloundra Cup and Glasshouse Handicap are the main attractions of the day’s racing however there are nine racing to get around.
Below our are preview and tips for 2019 Caloundra Cup Day.
I was keen on Sugar Boom but with the scratching, I’m happy to be with the unbeaten Jeweliana
Tycoon Ace was narrowly beaten last start by the smart Plague Stone at Doomben at Listed level. The six year old will have to rise in weight and get past what I predict to be the run away leader, and main threat, in Tarzan but I think he is up to the task.
Savacool comes through the better form lines and does look well placed in this race however she seems massive unders for mine. I’m happy to have an each way play on Rosie Posie who is racing well and will appreciate the step up to the mile. She got too far back last time she raced at the Sunshine Coast however worked home well. Look for the grey late!
Johnny Whitesox recorded back to back wins on the soft and heavy before running second at Ipswich last time out. I thought Glen Boss was very soft on the horse that day and didn’t seem to ride the horse out at all and he should have finished much closer than he did. Boss goes off and young Sean Cormack goes on.
Raiden is his own enemy at times but there is no doubting that on his day, he is right up to winning a race of this quality. He produced his first win for his new stable (formerly with Kris Lees) at this track by dominating in a class 5 two back on the heavy and had plenty go wrong when tightened for room last time out. The 1200m is a query and he will need to jump well, something he has struggled with, however his turn of foot is superior to most horses in this race.
Tardis is a progressive type of horse who is a last start winner at this track and distance. He proved he can handle the rain effected going on the Gold Coast two back and he looks well placed in this race.
Junipal weaved his way through the field in the QLD Guineas to finish faster than anything else in the race. I think this is the right form race when assessing this Group 3 contest and the Reset colt has drawn perfectly in barrier 3. There has been plenty of rain around this week in Brisbane and he is one from one on the heavy surface.
Big Duke is on the quick back up after his runner up placing last week behind Vow And Declare in the Tatt’s Cup. He handled the weight well last week and just simply ran into a better one on the day. He is an experienced horse and has the runs on the board in much tougher races than this and he has drawn perfectly. Looks a good bet in a race of this quality.
Jamaican Rain has had her chance at group 1 level a couple of times now and hasn’t quite measured up however she was not far away in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara last weekend. She is a very talented mare who won this race by almost four lengths last year. She has drawn perfectly in barrier two and should get a lovely run in transit. She grows a leg on the heavy going so that is not an issue if the rain sticks around.
Winter Passage was impressive first up at Ipswich and can improve going up to the 1200m. The $16 seems overs to me.
Boomtown Lass produced an enormous run to finish second at Ipswich and will go very close to winning a race of this quality.
