AFL Round 9 Tips & Preview

Fans and punters are licking their lips at the prospect of round nine with a plethora of quality games of football.

Gary Ablett will line up when the Cats and Dogs do battle on Saturday afternoon. Talk about a protected species. Fair shake of the goal post! North Melbourne and Sydney do battle on Saturday night should also be a cracker and an injury plagued Richmond side takes on a low key flying Hawthorn outfit on Sunday as the other key matches.

Our tips and preview for AFL Round 9 can be found below.

EAGLES -21.5 @ $1.90

The defending premier have strung together two impressive wins in a row and have started to hit their straps.

Wins over the Gold Coast and St Kilda see them sneak inside the top 8 and the home ground advantage should be enough to get them over the line this weak against an injury riddled Melbourne outfit.

The Dees have also managed two wins on the trot however they have been less than impressive in doing so.

The Eagles seem the best betting play in this and they can cover the line.

COLLINGWOOD -27.5 @ $1.90

The Saints have gone from ‘marching in’ to ‘sliding down’ in recent weeks. Look, they haven’t been horrible in those losses but it’s safe to say they had an easier start to the year than most clubs and full credit to them for capitalizing on this however a tough run of games now may seem them drop out of the eight.

Collingwood managed to show a lot of reliance to get past their bitter rivals in a very good Carlton side last week and they are looking like a team that will be there come the business end of the season.

There is not a lot of value available in the black and white this week however they can cover the line in what I’m predicting to be a somewhat low scoring affair.

The Brisbane Lions had a very good opportunity to solidify their spot inside the top four last week against the Dogs and they were more disappointing than the MRP failing to sanction the disgusting and brutal acts of Gary Ablett the past two weeks.

On the flip side, the Crows have found a semblence of their best form and they will all be on a high after they beat their little brother in the showdown at the weekend.

This should be a cracker of a game and the four points may be as valuable the decision by the Adelaide recruiting staff to look at the BBL just prior to the AFL draft.

Under 155.5 Total Points @ $1.85

It is extremely difficult to score against Geelong. In fact, it is as difficult to score as it was for Ben Stratton when he was rocking that disgusting mullet.

The Western Bulldogs are just as likely to put in a stinker as they are to blow a team away and they are simply not a betting proposition.

I’m not convinced that the Cats will cover the line but I’m convinced that this will be a hard fought, possession type game so I’m happy to take the unders.

Essendon continues to be over rated and they go into this contest against the eight placed Dockers as the clear favourite.

Even though they were clearly robbed last week after a certain someone in the Sydney team blatantly cheated and cost them the W.

They were rated by the market as unbeatable last week and the market suggest that is the case again.

I disagree.

North Melbourne @ $1.65

The Kangaroos were in the contest for a long time last week against the ladder leaders Geelong and although they are sitting second last, they umm, nah that prob reflects their year so far.

The Swans cheated their way to a win last week against the Dons and I’m sure all their meetings heading into this game have been about how they can take advantage of a weak as piss AFL house.

I’ve thrown a dart at the board and landed on North, with absolutely no confidence.

Gold Coast +32.5

The Gold Coast is another team that has benefited greatly from an easy draw to start the season and they are now surely set for a slide down the AFL ladder.

In saying that, Gerard Whately has Stewy Dew as the coach of the year so far and they were very good in fighting right to the final siren and just falling short last week against the Dees.

Port Adelaide are in desperate trouble with a number of injuries to key players and are limping toward the bye.

I see the Suns as a decent bet here with the big start.

HAWTHORN @ $2.24

Richmond started very well last week against Fremantle but they finished the game with a wet sail.

The Tigers have more injury concerns than a 38 year old reserves full forward and they are running out of options in many positions.

Hawthorn’s default win at the MCG against the Giants is hard to sum up as GWS seem like they don’t handle the going at the track.

This should be a cracker game of football however I think the value is with the Hawks.

GWS -38.5 @ $1.90

The Blues are getting closer and closer to another win.

The Carlton faithful will struggle to take solace in the fact that they pushed Collingwood to within a few goals last week however they showed plenty of ticker in that performance, as they have in a lot of their games this season.

They are not far away however I can’t see them beating A GWS team that will be looking to bounce back after a bad loss last week.

And the game isn’t at the G. Where GWS simply can not win.
