Super Rugby Round 10 Tips & Preview

It’s the halfway mark of the 2019 Super Rugby season and the headline story is the wild South African conference which seems to be flipped on its head every week.

Just five points separate the five sides and they have all shown the ability to beat anyone and everyone… except the Crusaders.

The Reds and Brumbies take on opponents from this topsy-turvy group this weekend and both desperately need wins themselves as they try to stay in touch with the Melbourne Rebels.

Check out our previews and tips for all six games coming up this weekend.

Chiefs v Lions
Chiefs to Cover -7.5

The Lions Australasian touring woes continued last week with a disappointing loss to the Brumbies and their trip continues with a visit to FMG Stadium. After a horrendous start to the season the Chiefs have found their footing with three straight wins including ending the Blues unbeaten run. A 7.5 point line looks way too low for this one and the Chiefs could turn this into an ugly game with a big scoreline.

Sunwolves v Lions
Sunwolves to Cover +15.5

At home the Sunwolves have actually been fairly competitive this season, even if it hasn’t produced a win yet. Five of their last seven have been decided by a single digit margin and they have given plenty of other sides a scare, including the Blues last month. As long as this line stays above 14 points the Sunwolves covering is a good value play here.

Sharks v Reds
Sharks to Cover -12.5

Which Sharks side is going to show up for this game? Will it be the one that beat the Lions by 37 or the one that lost to the Jaguares by 34 a week later? Chances are the answer to that question will be ‘a team somewhere in the middle’ and that side should have the quality to see off a Reds side that is improving but not quite at that competitive level yet. The line in this game looks pretty close to spot on and if it gets up to 17 or so then it may be worth taking the Reds to cover here.

Highlanders v Blues
Highlanders to Win by 1-12 @ $2.80

Five straight losses and the Highlanders are now officially desperate. The Blues had their four game winning run snapped last weekend as they faced their first away game since March 2nd, coincidentally five games ago. The Highlanders look like they will be welcoming Aaron Smith back and it is not a minute too soon as they get set to turn their fortunes around. The Blues might have their stuff sorted out at home but they have a lot to prove away from home.

Waratahs v Rebels
Waratahs to Win @ $2.00

Even in their bye week the Waratahs were still making headlines with Israel Folau’s social media posts. Now the side needs to rally as the conference leading Rebels come to town. Having been belted by the Stormers last weekend (at home no less), the Rebels will be out for redemption here but this is one of those games that just seems to be set up for a Waratahs statement win.

Stormers v Brumbies
Stormers to Cover -6.5

The Stormers and Brumbies are both flying to South Africa for this game but the intangible, “sleeping in your own bed” factor can’t be overlooked here. Nor can the “Aussie teams generally aren’t good in South Africa” factor. Because of those two elements, the Stormers to cover a one try line is an excellent value play and the best bet of the weekend.
