2019 William Reid Stakes Tips

It may be somewhat overshadowed by Golden Slipper Day, but the William Reid Stakes is set to be an outstanding race at The Valley this Friday night. It has been a long time since a genuine star won the William Reid Stakes, you are kidding yourself if you think Flamberge, Silent Sedition or Hellbent are stars, but that could be the case this in 2019. Can Sunlight claim another Group 1 win or will there be a William Reid Stakes upset?

William Reid Stakes - Winner
10. Sunlight

I’m not going to lie to you – I wasn’t going to tip Sunlight. I was actually very keen on Shoals and Anthony Freedman has ruined everything by scratching the underrated mare from the William Reid Stakes. She may be odds-on, but there is now no doubt that Sunlight has to be the betting play in this contest. She was outstanding in the Newmarket Handicap and, let’s face it, this is a much weaker contest. Anybody that uses the phrase odds-on, look-on is an idiot and in this case it is odds-on, get your bet on.

9. Written By

Written By has generally been an overrated galloper during his racing career to date, but I think that The Valley is the perfect track for him. Jordan Childs needs to not play any silly buggers and get extremely aggressive on Written By in the early stages. That is his only chance of beating Sunlight and Childs needs to let a fast horse run fast.

7. Spright

Spright is the type of horse that every punter should hate. She always runs well and flashes home in Group 1 races and then drops back in class and gets beaten by plodders. It is truly disgusting. She was beaten in the Wenona Girl Quality last start and that was a gross race, but knowing Spright, she can bounce back at Group 1 level.

3. Dothraki

Dothraki has no chance of winning this race. The horse hates the finishing post more than George Calombaris hates paying his staff penalty rates. In saying that, he is a consistent galloper and there is no reason that he can’t be thereabouts in the William Reid Stakes. He will add value to exotics and winter is coming!
