Kooza has improved through his two career starts to date and finds himself in a very winnable race at Newcastle today. The High Chaparral gelding missed the jump at Kembla Grange on debut and was very green in running, but he took plenty of benefit into his second-up target and hit the line well for third over at a mile last week. He’ll appreciate a step up in trip today and will look to finish over the top of his rivals.
Belle Du Sud is a horse that typically improves with racing and she should be ready to peak fourth-up at Newcastle this afternoon. The Savabeel mare resumed this time for fourth over 1300m at Warwick Farm before just missing when flying home to finish a half-head second over 1500m at Kembla Grange. She took up the running and tired late to finish eleventh at Randwick last time out, but she’ll enjoy a step back in class into this field.
Garrard is a horse with plenty of ability and she has a big class edge on the field for Race 9 at Sale this afternoon. The daughter of Sepoy has typically raced in tougher company than she finds in country Victoria today and had form around some of her age-groups best horses in 2017. She hasn’t been seen at the races since September, but she has trialled well in the lead-up to this and will be right in the finish.
Joy Forever faces a step up in class at Newcastle this afternoon, but she broke her maiden in impressive fashion last time out and can go on with the job here. The High Chaparral mare showed decent ability through her maiden campaign without a lot of luck in 2017, but held on to beat a fair field at Hawkesbury first-up. James McDonald is a big tick and she looks over the odds at double figures ($10 at the time of publish).
