2018 World Cup: Day 13 Preview

It’s a huge night for Australian sport and everything is on the line when the Socceroos face Peru, potentially for a position in the knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup.

Demark and France will square off in the other Group C fixture while later in the night, Iceland will play Croatia and Nigeria face Argentina.

Australia vs Peru (12am)
Australia to Win ($3.10)
France vs Denmark (12am)
France to Win ($2.25)

Australia’s chances of progressing into the knockout stage could hinge on the result of this Group C clash between Denmark at France.

The French are poised to top the Group after securing wins over the Socceroos and Peru, but they can still surrender that tag if they lose to Denmark. For a nation of Les Bleus’ calibre, they really have not lived up to their potential in Russia so-far but they still do look like a side that could dominate, when the penny eventually drops.

Denmark opened their account with a gritty 1-0 win over Peru and subsequently put themselves in the box seat to progress but failed to maintain a lead over Australia last week and were arguably lucky to take the draw. They face a far harder task in France and will need to muster their best performance so far to compete.

A draw will be enough for Denmark to knock Australia out of the Cup, but France should prove too strong.

Iceland vs Croatia (4am)
Iceland to Win ($3.50)

Croatia will seek to claim a third-consecutive win at the 2018 World Cup when they play Iceland early tomorrow morning.

Croatia’s golden generation have certainly turned up to play and they comfortably accounted for a decent Nigeria side 2-0 in their campaign opener, before mustering a truly dominant performance to beat Argentina 3-0 and confirm their position atop Group D. star midfielder Luka Modric will be rested for this match, however and that could open the door for the Nordic minnows.

It’s been an up and down campaign for Iceland at their first World Cup – a draw with Argentina looked to be a great sign for their chances, but they were quickly brought back down to earth when finished on the wrong end of a 2-1 score line with Nigeria.

Without Modric in the Croatian line-up, this looms as a real opportunity for Iceland and they remain a real chance of progressing to the knockout stage if they win this match. Upsets have been the order of the week and we could be set for another one here.

Nigeria vs Argentina (4am)
Over 3 Goals Scored ($2.20)

The second Group D match is set to be a great contest, between two nations who remain live chances of progressing to the knockout stage of the Cup.

For a nation widely expected to make another decider, Argentina have been extremely disappointing and could be eliminated after this match. A draw with Iceland first-up was further compounded by a flogging at the hands of Croatia and even if they beat Nigeria here, Argentina will need to hope that Iceland doesn’t pull off an upset win over Croatia.

Things didn’t look great for Nigeria after they drew into this Group but a win over Iceland on Matchday 2 has given them a serious chance of progressing to the next stage. Ahmed Musa was outstanding for the Eagles last week and he will need to take advantage of every chance again if his nation is to take something from this match and ultimately, win a spot in the knockouts.

Argentina have to take all three points and probably put Nigeria to the sword here and surely, the cream will rise to the top and their stars will fire.
