Impossible Goals

Impossible Goals

Real Madrid made history with their third consecutive Champions League title against Liverpool in Russia.

The Real Madrid marksman wasn’t able to get on the scoresheet against the Reds, but he would love to get his hands on the FIFA Goal of the Year Award for his effort against Juventus.

The Puskás Award is given to the most beautiful goal of the year and Tim Cahill was the last Australian player to make the list for his effort in 2014 and Riley McGree will hopefully join him for his effort in the A-League finals.

Take a look at some of these impossible goals!

Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

For the past few seasons Bale’s Champions League highlights were limited to his hat-trick performance against Inter-Milan. You’ll agree that this effort against Liverpool in the Champions League Final was a special effort.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

Cometh the hour, cometh the man and no one can deny Ronaldo on this occasion. While the Madrid striker can certainly divide neutral fans, you can’t begrudge the fact that Ronaldo loves the big stage. This effort in the Champions League quarter-final against Juventus even drew applause from the Italian opposition and will go down as one of the more amazing goals in Champions League history.

Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid)

Zidane was the best midfielder on the planet at the time and current and former players talk about this goal in the same way cricket fans talk about Shane Warne’s ‘ball of the century. The FIFA goal of the year awards wasn’t introduced until 2009 but if they were backdated to 2002 Zidane’s effort for Real Madrid would earn him another award. Zidane helped Real Madrid win the Champions League Final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Riley McGree (Newcastle Jets)

Riley McGree’s effort against Melbourne City helped propel the Newcastle Jets into the2018 A-League Grand Final. Without a doubt one of the goals of the year and it should be enough to earn the Newcastle youngster a nomination for FIFA’s Goal of the Year Awards.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Manchester United)

The Armenian attacker’s effort earned him the goal of the year for Manchester United in the 2016/17 season. Mkhitaryan’s scorpion kick against Sutherland was a special effort but not enough to get him on the list for FIFA goal of the year for that season.

Oliver Giroud (Arsenal)

The former Arsenal striker was judged to have scored the goals of the year for his effort for his goal against Crystal Palace in the 2017 EPL season.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden)

The Swedish striker is a human highlight reel and is one of the few players on the field whose words are matched by his actions. Check out this mind-bending effort against England that earned him FIFA’s top award for the goal of the year in 2013.

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

Former England striker Wayne Rooney described this strike as his most important goal in his Manchester United career. With the game on the line, Rooney got the winner with this amazing strike to help Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to a victory over rivals Manchester City.

Tim Cahill (Australia)

If new Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk is looking for a reason to take Tim Cahill to a fourth World Cup in Russia, he only needs to watch the film of Cahill’s effort against his side in 2014. While Cahill couldn’t save Australia that day his long-range volley on his weaker foot was enough to earn him a nomination for the goal of the year in 2014.

James Rodriguez (Columbia)

Columbian maestro James Rodriguez’s effort at the 2014 World Cup earned him the goal of the year honour and a contract with Real Madrid. After his side was eliminated from the 2014 World Cup, Rodriguez went on to establish himself as one of the top midfielders in Europe thanks to this amazing strike.
