Warrnambool: Race 6
No. 1 Ancient King

There are few jumpers in Australia better than Ancient King and he can extended his impressive record in this afternoon’s Galleywood Hurdle. The Ramonti gelding broke his maiden over the jumps at last year’s Warrnambool Festival and has won each of his subsequent four starts over the jumps, including a dominant win in the Grand National (3900m) at Sandown in August. He has been kept to flat racing this year and has been fair, but he is a class above anything else in this small field and he’ll be extremely tough to beat.

Warrnambool: Race 7
No. 14 Honey Esprit

Honey Esprit is a winner at Warrnambool this preparation and looks perfectly placed in Race 7 this afternoon. The daughter of Bel Esprit took a position close to the pace in the Gold Distaff (1400m) at Caulfield last time out and was strong to the line, finishing fourth behind French Emotion. This is a big step back in class and with in-form hoop Jamie Kah in the saddle, she’ll prove extremely difficult to beat.

Canterbury: Race 5
No. 9 Laussel

Laussel resumed for a dominant two-length win over 1400m at Newcastle and will only improve second-up at Canterbury this afternoon. The Animal Kingdom filly has strung together a smart record and will take her place in this field with two wins and a minor from only four career starts. This is a step up in class, but she drops in weight and is drawn perfectly with Kerrin McEvoy aboard. $5 looks to be overs.

Warrnambool: Race 8
No. 1 Ulmann

Ulmann absolutely dominated last year’s Wangoom Handicap first-up and he can repeat that effort and result this afternoon. The Sebring gelding has been a strong and consistent performer throughout his entire racing career so far, but he’s found another gear since arriving in Darren Weir’s care and is a multiple black-type winner for the master trainer. He’ll need to show some early speed from a wide gate, but he is as tough as they come and on class alone, should find himself right in the finish of this race and at great odds ($14/$4.20) at publish).
