Unforgotten is the 2018 Australian Oaks Winner

Unforgotten has realised her staying potential by reeling in Hiyaam in the final straight at Royal Randwick to win the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) this afternoon.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock failed to beat a runner over 1400m first-up this time, but has continued to improve upon stepping out in trip and still managed to finish second in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) a fortnight ago, despite not being suited by the tempo.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Hugh Bowman found a position within the Australian Oaks field as Hiyaam, Contessa Vanessa and Chilly Cha Cha set a break-neck tempo from the outset.

Enjoying her run off the pace, Bowman gradually began working the filly through her gears as the field turned for home and set about chasing down runaway leader Hiyaam.

Appearing to have too much work ahead, Unforgotten mustered a huge turn of foot and found herself on level terms with 100m to travel; extending to hit the line ahead of Hiyaam and an impressive Miss Admiration, who jumped at odds of $126.

“She’s been a funny mare. I haven’t had a lot to do with her, but this prep the team said that she’s our Oaks filly and after her trials, I wasn’t convinced,” Bowman said after his fifth Australian Oaks win and third in succession.

“Once she got to distances that are suitable, they know that they’re talking about the Chris Waller stable and she’s a lovely filly.

“The slight concern was her running a strong mile-and-a-half, but it was a staying test today. Hiyaam made it a real mile-and-a-half test, but this filly came through with flying colours.

“Who knows what’s in store for her in the future.”

Waller was understandably thrilled with Unforgotten’s win in the 2018 Australian Oaks

“She’s a shining star and I think today is a sign of a bit more to come,” Waller said.

“We stuck to the plan and it was good to see her bounce back so quickly with a second-up win and you could see last start, it was a very, very good run. I can’t wait for next year with her.

“Full credit to the second horse that beat her last start – it set a very strong tempo and has done well to hold on for a brave second. It was a true test, but as you can see she’s just a calm and relaxed filly and gee that excites me.”

A race like the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) looks-to-be an ideal Spring Carnival target for Unforgotten later in the year.
