Written By has justified a big move in betting by holding on to win the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude C&G (1100m) at Caulfield this afternoon.
The Written Tycoon colt was $10 into $5.50 at jump this afternoon and did his chances of justifying the trent no harm when taking up a forward position in the Blue Diamond Prelude field, on the heels of pacesetters Halvorsen and High Ratio.
Enjoying a good run in transit, jockey Jordan Childs was offered clear running when the field straightened and led to colt to the fore of the field; kicking clear and sustaining a strong sprint to beat Plague Stone by a half-length.
$9 shot Native Soldier to finish third, albeit by a gap while Seberate ($17) was also smart to the line to round out the first four.
Trainer Graeme Begg was understandably thrilled with Written By’s performance and revealed that both the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) remain on the table for the two-year-old this season.
“We haven’t been able to train the horse properly, because of his barrier manners but I think we’re on top of him now,” Begg said after the race.
“It’s just great because I think he’s a really serious horse. We’ve found putting him in (barriers) early and getting on top of him and then the jockey getting on in the gates (is the way to deal with him).
“He’s got great determination this horse. It doesn’t matter if it’s a gallop, trial or race, he just wants to hit the line – he’s a real racehorse.
“We’ll see how he pulls up, but I’d say there will be every likelihood (Of running in the Blue Diamond Stakes). Obviously, we’ve got ambitions of going to Sydney (Golden Slipper), we’ll just work it out.”
Written By was a $31 chance in our Blue Diamond Stakes market prior to this afternoon’s win, but he has firmed following the tough performance.
Plague Stone continued to wind up in the final straight this afternoon and a step up to 1200m looks ideal, particularly with natural improvement. He remains lock on the top line of our Blue Diamond market at an $8 quote, alongside Kinky Boom and Long Leaf.
