Coolmore Classic for Millie Fox Stakes Winner Daysee Doom

Tough mare Daysee Doom has produced a perfect return to racing at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon by mustering an impressive turn of foot to win the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m).

Daysee Doom has been the standout performer for Ron Quinton since the beginning of 2017, but she was friendless in Millie Fox Stakes betting in the hours leading up to jump and drifted to a $7 quote.

Jumping from the gates well, the Domesday mare took an ideal position in transit on the heels of Girl Sunday, who flew the barriers and set a reasonable tempo from the outset.

Offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight, Daysee Doom appeared to be feeling the run when she was joined by the likes of Foxplay and Prompt Response, but producing a strong turn of foot in the final 200m to win the race in a fanning finish.

Quinton was pleased with the mare’s first-up performance and confirmed that the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), a race he won with Peeping in 2016, is her major campaign target again this season.

“She’s always shown that she’s tough. She’s a bit mad, but she’s tough,” Quinton said.

Andrew (Atkins) really gets on well with her and I have to thank all my start at home too, everyone riding her in work. She’s a real tough nut and doesn’t know when she’s beaten.

“We could have run fourth or fifth, but we’re lucky we won. It’s so important for breeding and they’ve already been offered big money for her, but she won’t be going anywhere in the near future.

“They’ll both (stable mate Dixie Blossoms) end up in the Coolmore. We can’t keep them apart for too long.”

$15 shot Girl Sunday was impressive in her Autumn Carnival return and will only improve off her second-placing, while Foxplay ($4.80) will prove difficult to beat in her second-up target after finishing third.
