Pierata Is The Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Winner

Pierata has continued his outstanding run of form with a dominant win in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on the Gold Coast this afternoon.

The impressive son of Pierro firmed into clear favouritism for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas with a dominant win in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1400m) a fortnight ago and he took a position a little bit better than midfield on the rail, after jumping well this afternoon.

Pierata enjoyed an easy run in transit, but he was faced with a wall of horses as the field began to straighten and required plenty of luck to find clear running.

Melbourne Cup-winning hoop Corey Brown threaded the needle with the colt with 300m to travel and he was nothing more than a passenger as Pierata produced a blistering turn of foot to easily put away his rivals; beating Goodfella by more than two lengths.

Calculated mustered a smart sprint to fly home on the outside of the field and finish a strong third.

Trainer Greg Hickman has always had a big opinion of the three-year-old and was elated with his performance and this afternoon’s result.

“It’s everything. Everyone has been really good this week and the horse has been perfect, as I’ve been saying,” Hickman said.

“Our little hiccup we sorted out and he didn’t look real sore today, did he. Everything’s been good and has just worked out perfect today.

“They’re part of our lives and part of our family and you wouldn’t do it for any other reason, so it’s good.

“He’s only going to improve this little horse. Corey’s got a big opinion of him and stuck to him for the four runs. Showed faith in him and faith in us and he (Pierata) has some good form around him. He can gallop.

“I thought we were going to get hung up there for a little bit, but it just worked out perfect.”

Brown delivered a gem of a ride aboard Pierata to win the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas and echoed Hickman’s sentiments surrounding his likely improvement in seasons to come.

“He had a terrific run and drew the ideal barrier,” Brown said.

“The fence hasn’t been off but nothing has come from the fence all day. I was a little bit scared, but the heavens opened when he straightened and once he got the gap he exploded again, like he did last time at Doomben.

“I’m not tell you anything you don’t already know, but he’s got bigger and better things in store definitely next preparation.

“I know the better or the longer he travels, the bigger turn of foot he has, so I elected to come back but I could have driven a bus through their when they opened, his acceleration again today was just unbelievable.”

The Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) shapes as a possible target for Pierata during the forthcoming Autumn Carnival.
