Caulfield Best Bets – Sunday January 7th

Caulfield Best Bets – Sunday January 7th

Saturday’s meet at Mornington may have been abandoned, but there is still plenty of top quality Victorian racing set to take place at Caulfield on Sunday afternoon.

We have analysed every horse in detail and uncovered our Best Bets for Sunday’s card at Caulfield Racecourse.

Race 1 #9 Shenandoah – Each Way ($6/$2.20)

The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Shenandoah has returned to racing in strong and consistent form this time and might not be offered a better chance to return to winning form at metro grade than in this race. The Darci Brahma mare took a couple of runs to find form this time, but has responded well to a continual step up in trip and will relish the 1800m at Caulfield. In-form hoop Zac Spain should be able to find a forward position from barrier 7 and the four-year-old will take plenty of beating under the conditions and with a light weight in tow. She has already firmed in our market, but still represents terrific value at the time of publish.

BET NOW: Caulfield Race 1
Race 4 #13 Keen ($3.50) – BEST BET

Keen was dominant on debut at Cranbourne and will be far better for the experience when he takes his place in Race 4 at Caulfield on Sunday. The Teofilo colt took up the running in the 1400m race and was barely tested; striding clear to hit the line more than five lengths ahead of closest rival My Shu Mai. Keen has drawn ideally into this race in barrier 4 and Stephen Baster will be able to take up the running again. The three-year-old is clearly an above-average talent and this is terrific placing from the Busuttin & Young stables. He can continue his undefeated career start here.

BET NOW: Caulfield Race 4
Race 8 #16 The Avenger – Each Way ($7/$2.50)

The Avenger has quickly built to the task through two starts this time and is ready to peak third-up in Race 8 at Caulfield on Sunday. The son of Smart Missile immediately stamped himself as a horse to follow upon debuting in spring; finishing a close second at his first two starts before ending his campaign with consecutive wins. There is a slight query over his ability at the Victorian way of going as all six of his starts to date have been north of the border, but he is rock-hard fit, weighted ideally and will take a world of beating if he brings his best.

BET NOW: Caulfield Race 8
Race 9 #6 Revolving Door – Each Way ($6.50/$2.40)

Revolving Door has not been seen at the races since September, but he is a horse that typically comes to hand quickly and he has a class edge over most of the horses set to step out in the last. The son of Sebring has been a strong and consistent performer in grades higher than this throughout his entire racing career to date and was a strong first-up winner over 1200m at Moonee Valley last time in. Revolving Door has form around some of the country’s best sprinters throughout the last two years and jockey Mark Zahra will have plenty of options from the rails draw on Sunday. He is over the odds at his current quote.
