The Winterbottom Stakes is the premier sprint race held in WA over the Perth Summer Racing Carnival and is the second Group 1 of the festival.

Taking place annually in late November, the $1.5 million event is conducted over 1200m at Ascot Racecourse and is a weight-for-age race. 

Good Winterbottom Stakes lead-up races including the Prince of Wales Stakes (1200m) and the Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) run in the weeks prior. 

Increasingly interstate raiders are making their way west for the Winterbottom Stakes and from 2017-19 all three winners of the Group 1 came off a Melbourne lead-up race. Paulele (Group 1 Champions Sprint 11th at Flemington) was the last Winterbottom Stakes winner in 2022 to come via a Victorian race.

Perth’s Group 3 $1.5 million The Gold Rush (1400m), held for the first time in 2022, makes a nice next-up option for Winterbottom Stakes graduates. In 2022 Kissonallforcheeks ran second in both events.

The 2023 Winterbottom Stakes winner Overpass won that year’s The Quokka and successfully defended his title in that $4 million buy in race the following April in 2024.
