The Gong

Are you looking for the latest on The Gong? The race betting experts at Neds have everything you need to know, all in the one place.

First conducted in 2019 The Gong is one of the newer ‘Special Condition’ races that make-up the wider The Everest Carnival in Sydney during the spring.

Offering $1 million in prize money, the event is run and won at Kembla Grange Racecourse on a Saturday in late November and along with the previous Saturday’s The Hunter at Newcastle Racecourse, is one of the richest provincial races held in the state of New South Wales.

Run and won over 1600m, The Going is a quality handicap event open to horses aged three-years-old and above.

The Gong makes a nice end-of-season target for horses out of the Group races over the 1400m – 1600m distance range over the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

Mares in The Gong field may come via a Victoria Derby Day run three weeks prior in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington, while four-year-olds may target this race off an October run in the $7.5 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill. Count De Rupee (2nd in 2021) is the latest The Gong winner to come off a lead-up Golden Eagle run.

The $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) is another potential lead-up into The Hunter, some gallopers stepping back down in distance for the million-dollar showdown.
