Shannon Stakes
Looking for this year’s Shannon Stakes betting markets, odds, field & tips? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
Run over 1,500 metres, the Shannon Stakes is a Group 2 race taking place at Rosehill Racecourse as part of September’s Golden Rose Stakes Day. With a $300,000 prize purse, it attracts lots of middle-distance runners, mainly from New South Wales, and it can serve as a potential lead-up into the $1 million The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange in November. Mister Sea Wolf (2019) was the latest horse to do the Shannon Stakes – The Gong race double.
This race has been run over several distances. For its first 12 years it was run at 1500 metres. In 1991, it was run at 1550 metres, before returning to 1500 metres for the next 8 years. In 2001, it was run at 1400 metres, followed by its current length of 1500, which it has stayed at since 2002.
Starting out as a Principal Race, it then progressed to Group 3 status in 1985, followed by Group 2 in 2001.
The horse that wins this race is exempt from the ballot in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) held the following month at Royal Randwick.
Ellsberg (3rd in 2022) was the last Shannon Stakes graduate to back-up and win the Epsom Handicap. He further franked the 2022 Shannon Stakes form also completing the Five Diamond Prelude – The Five Diamonds double that spring.
The 2023 Shannon Stakes winner Cepheus went on to win the $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes before a second in $3 million The Big Dance in Sydney on Melbourne Cup Day. Sadly, Cepheus had to be euthanised the following spring after suffering a tragic injury during trackwork.
