Queensland Derby
Looking for this year’s Queensland Derby betting odds, field and tips? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
Run over 2,400 metres, the Queensland Derby is a Group 1 race taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in late May or early June during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. With a $1 million prize purse as of 2022, the event attracts a quality field of three-year-old stayers.
After there was no Queensland Derby run in 2020 due to COVID-19, the event was moved forward on the winter racing carnival for 2021 and now takes place on Kingsford-Smith Cup Day.
The key Queensland Derby lead-up race is now the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m). In 2021 the ATC Derby – SA Derby double champion Explosive Jack chased a rare treble, but only managed to run third in the Queensland Derby results that year.
Warmonger (2nd in 2024) was the last Queensland Derby winner to come via the SA Derby when he won the Eagle Farm feature by a record 10.4 lengths!
The top three-year-olds out of the Queensland Derby field may opt to take-on the older horses at WFA in the new-look $1.2 million Group 2 The Q22 race run over 2200m on Stradbroke Handicap Day.

Which Horse Will Win The Queensland Derby
The best way to pick which horse will win the Queensland Derby in 2024 is to take into account their earlier autumn / winter racing form, assess the barriers and look for the genuine Group 1 stayers in the mix.
Additional factors to consider when picking the Queensland Derby winner include:
- Strong Stayers – Look for a horse that has been recently getting a top 3 result at distances of 2000 metres or more.
- Single Figure Odds – Only very rarely have horses jumped from double-digit odds to win the race.
- Local Lead ups – Most recent winners had also won their previous race, so look for the top result in similar length races. Pinarello (2022) was the latest last-start winner to take out the Queensland Derby having won a Group 2 in New Zealand five weeks earlier.
Queensland Derby Favourites 2024
Early favourites in in 2024 Queensland Derby betting include ATC Oaks champion Autumn Angel, Chris Waller’s untapped Ocean Park gelding Misterkipchoge, and his progressive stablemate Tannhauser.
