Northerly Stakes Winners
From the race’s inauguration in 1976, all the way up to 2024, we have every Kingston Town Classic and Northerly Stakes winner listed from past race meets. Included are finishing times, sex, age and more details of the Group 1 Northerly Stakes winners in Perth, WA on the race formerly known as the Kingston Town Classic.

From 2022 onwards the winners of this race are known as the Northerly Stakes winners after the event was renamed in honour of former champion racehorse, and dual Cox Plate and Australian Cup hero, Northerly.
The inaugural Kingston Town Classic winner was Family Of Man in 1976 who was best known for his 1977 Cox Plate triumph the following year. Family Of Man returned two years later to become the first dual Kingston Town Classic winner in history with a second success in 1978 when the race was known as the Marlboro 50,000.
The event was named the Kingston Town Classic from 2007 – 2022 to honour its 1982 champion Kingston Town. The 1980 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year, Kingston Town won this race when it ran as the Western Mail Classic and won three straight editions of the Cox Plate (1980-82) along 11 other Group 1 races.
Multiple Kingston Town Classic winners: Family Man (1976, 1978); Summer Beau (1996, 1997); Old Comrade (2000, 2001); Niconero (2006, 2008); Playing God (2010, 2011).
Other standout Kingston Town Classic winners before the event was renamed the Northerly Stakes include: Vo Rogue (1988), Better Loosen Up (1989), Sniper’s Bullet (2009), Luckygray (2012), and Arcadia Queen (2018).
In 2022 the favourite, last start WA Guineas winning filly Amelia’s Jewel ($2.90F), became the first runner to win the event as the Northerly Stakes before her brave second in the inaugural $4 million The Quokka race back in Perth the following autumn in April of 2023.
The 2023 Northerly Stakes winner was the Sean & Jake Casey-trained Railway Stakes third place-getter Dom To Shoot ($21) who charged home strongly late to deny the beaten favourite Zaaki victory in a final stride thriller.
The 2024 Northerly Stakes winner was the Ciaron Maher-trained Victorian raider Light Infantry Man ($12) who improved on a 12th in the Railway to easily account for impressive 100/1 shot Admiration Express while the fellow Maher runner Socks Nation ran a brave third to complete the trifecta.
