Run over 1,050 metres, Lightning Stakes is a short-distance Listed sprint race taking place at Morphettville Racecourse in South Australia at the tail-end of the Adelaide Winter Racing Carnival.
Carrying a prize purse of $120,000 as of 2024, the event runs at the end of July and is a set weights race open only to two and three-year-old horses.
A number of outstanding horses have won the Lightning Stakes in recent years in the early stages of their career including Wild Rain (2015), subsequent Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes and Moir Stakes winner Viddora (2016), and the Chris Waller-trained Nature Strip (2018) whose following victories included the Group 1 Moir, VRC Sprint Classic and TJ Smith Stakes.
The form out of the 2021 Lightning Stakes was franked with the winner Beau Rossa going on to run second next-up in Adelaide’s Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) and Caulfield’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).

Which Horse Will Win The Lightning Stakes in 2024?
The best way to pick which horse will win the Lightning Stakes in 2024 is to take into account their lead-up form, assess the barriers and look at the allocated weights.
Additional factors to consider when picking the SAJC Lightning Stakes winner include:
- Weight Relief – Look out for a horse which gains an advantage from carrying less weight due to the set weight conditions.
- Millions Flashback – Although it takes place almost six months earlier, if you can find any entrants that were place-getters in the Magic Millions, they just might be able to tackle this distance with flair.
- Short Distance Specialists – The Lightning Stakes is run over just 1050m so is best suited to the short-distance specialists in the mix.
