JJ Atkins
Looking for this year’s JJ Atkins betting odds, field and form guide? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
Run over 1,600 metres, the J.J. Atkins is a Group 1 race for two-year-olds taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in early to mid June as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
The mile feature draws a quality field of juveniles each season and as of 2021 offers $1 million in prize money. A key support act on Stradbroke Handicap Day, the J.J. Atkins has been run and won since 1893.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the prize money for the 2020 J.J. Atkins was cut to $350,000 and the distance to 1400m before returning to the mile distance in 2021 and the prize money boosted to $1 million.
The race serves as the perfect target for graduates out of the $1 million Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) held a fortnight earlier and Sizzling (2012) followed by the filly Sheeza Belter (2022) and the Godolphin-raced Broadsiding (2024) are the latest to do the double.
Many top horses have won the J.J. Atkins over the years during their two-year-old seasons including in recent years The Autumn Sun (2018) and Rothfire (2020).

Which Horse Will Win The JJ Atkins in 2024
The best way to pick which horse will win the J.J. Atkins in 2024 is to take into account their lead-up winter racing form, assess the barriers, look for the proven Group winning two-year-olds and those proven over the mile.
Additional factors to consider when picking the JJ Atkins winner include:
- Hot Leads – The BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes is the key lead-up into the J.J. Atkins each year. Sheeza Belter (2022) and Broadsiding (2024) are the latest two-year-olds to do the double.
- Interstate Invaders – Keep an eye out for entrants who have recently won a race in Sydney.
- Best Barrier – Over the past thirty years, barrier six has produced the most winners.
- Boys’ Club – Until Sheeza Belter in 2022, no filly had won the J.J. Atkins since Linky Dink (2009).
JJ Atkins Favourites 2024
From 2010-24 eight favourites in J.J. Atkins betting saluted for the punters most recently with Rothfire ($3.50 in 2020), Converge ($2.90 in 2021) and Broadsiding ($1.60 in 2024).
Early 2024 J.J. Atkins favourites include James Cummings’ Group 1 Champagne Stakes winning colt Broadsiding, the Chris Waller-trained nicely-bred The Autumn Sun colt Mr Artemisia, and the progressive Annabel Neasham-trained Hellbent filly Amelius.
