Courtenay was the inaugural Cantala Stakes winner from 1881 when the event ran as the Coburg Stakes.

One of the most notable early Cantala Stakes winners was Amounis who won in 1926 as well as 1929.

From 1998–2015 the race was known as the Emirates Stakes.

Other key Cantala Stakes winners throughout history include: Storm Queen (1966), Vain (1969), Gunsynd (1971), Taj Rossi (1973), and Better Loosen Up (1989) who went on to win the next year’s Japan Cup overseas.

Better Loosen Up (1989) was also the last horse to complete the Cantala Stakes / Cox Plate double.

Skyjack (1974) was the last three-year-old Cantala Stakes winner.

Pride Of Jenni (2023) was the last Cantala Stakes winning mare.

Scenic Peak holds the current Cantala Stakes race record winning in 2002 in a time of 1 minute 33:49 seconds.

Alligator Blood was the first official Kennedy Champions Mile winner following the race being renamed in 2022.

The 2023 Champions Mile winner was the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Pride Of Jenni ($13) who was enormous in the lead setting a strong pace up front to go from barrier to box and hold off Mr Brightside and Alligator Blood to record her second Group 1 success in the space of seven days at Flemington in an upset.

The 2024 Champions Mile winner was the Team Hayes-trained Mr Brightside ($5) who had run placings the past two years before his big late run to post his eighth Group 1 success with Craig Williams getting the late gap.
