Run over 1,100 metres, the Canonbury Stakes is a Group 3 race taking place at Rosehill Racecourse in late January or early February. With a $250,000 prize purse as of 2024, it attracts a field of young, unproven horses looking to make a mark ahead of the bigger features of the autumn.

Starting out as Principal race, this race was made a Listed race in 1979, followed by an upgrade to Group 3 in 2015.

Open only to two-year-old colts and geldings, it is held on the same day as the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) which is the fillies’ equivalent.

Horses that do well in this race may end up in the field of the Todman Stakes or the Blue Diamond Stakes. The key aim for the majority of the Canonbury Stakes runners is the Group 1 $4.95 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) and Fine And Dandy (1958), Sebring (2007) and Vancouver (2015) all completed the double.

Most recently Best Of Bordeaux won the Canonbury Stakes, the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes and then ran second in the 2022 Golden Slipper Stakes results.

The 2023 Canonbury Stakes also provided that year’s Golden Slipper winner (Shinzo who ran third) and third placegetter (King’s Gambit who ran second).

canonbury stakes 2025 RESULTS

The official 2025 Canonbury Stakes results will be available below once the race takes place on Saturday February 1, 2025.

  1. #1 Blitzburg
  2. #4 Hillier
  3. #6 Peleus

In a thrilling display at Rosehill on Saturday, Blitzburg ($4.80), trained by Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou and ridden by Tyler Schiller, clinched the 2025 Canonbury Stakes with a commanding all-the-way victory. The Snitzel colt broke sharply from the gates and set a blistering pace, maintaining his lead throughout the race to win by a comfortable 1.18 length margin. Key moments included Blitzburg’s impressive acceleration at the 400m mark, leaving his rivals struggling to keep up. Post-race, Ryan expressed cautious optimism about Blitzburg’s future, noting his potential but remaining undecided about a 2025 Golden Slipper bid on March 22. With this dominant performance, Blitzburg has certainly marked himself as a colt to watch in the upcoming juvenile races.

Which Horse Will Win The Canonbury Stakes in 2025

The best way to pick which horse will win the Canonbury Stakes is to take into account any lead-up form from the two-year-old races, previous Rosehill performers and juveniles tested in Group company.

Additional factors to consider when picking the Canonbury Stakes winner include:

  • Debutantes – Seeing as this race is for youngsters, a lot of the field is going to be made up of colts and geldings having their first big race. You may be able to find a very select few that have some experience at Sydney meets. Best Of Bordeaux (2022) was the last debutant to win the Canonbury.
  • Small Field – Due to being only for male two-year-olds, this race usually draws a small field. This makes place betting easier, though of course with a smaller payoff.
